As physiotherapists, we're often asked about the best exercise for men's health, the best stretch, or the best treatment for feeling healthier and more energised. The truth is that the biggest improvements in physical and mental wellbeing rarely come from one magic solution. Instead, they come from consistently doing a few simple things well.

As someone who works in healthcare and spends a lot of time helping others look after their bodies, these are the habits I prioritise in my own life because science consistently shows they make a difference.

Firstly, regular strength training. Research continues to demonstrate that resistance exercise improves muscle mass, bone health, metabolic function, and even mental wellbeing. You don't need to spend hours in the gym, just a few sessions per week can have significant benefits.

Secondly, walking. It sounds almost too simple, but daily movement is one of the most powerful health interventions available. A brisk walk improves cardiovascular health, supports weight management, reduces stress, and can help clear the mind after a busy day.

Sleep is another non-negotiable. Poor sleep affects recovery, concentration, mood, hormone regulation, and injury risk. Prioritising 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night is one of the best investments you can make in your health.

I also try to spend time outdoors whenever possible. Exposure to natural light, particularly in the morning, helps regulate our body clock, supports sleep quality, and has been linked to improved mood and energy levels.

Finally, maintaining social connections is often overlooked. Whether it's training with a friend, playing sport, or simply catching up over coffee, strong social relationships are consistently associated with better physical and mental health outcomes.

Men’s health doesn’t need to be complicated. The foundations are often the most effective: move regularly, get stronger, sleep well, spend time outside, and stay connected. Small habits, repeated consistently, can have a profound impact on how we feel and function every day.

The reality is that most of us struggle with one or more of these habits at different points in life. Injuries, pain, work, family commitments, and stress can all get in the way. If an injury or ongoing ache is stopping you from exercising, sleeping well, or enjoying the activities that make you feel good, we'd love to help. Our goal isn't perfection, it's helping you move better, feel stronger, and return to the things that bring value to your life. Sometimes all it takes is the right plan, the right support, and a little momentum to get things moving in the right direction again.
