Craniosacral Therapy

In our fast-paced world, many of us carry stress and tension in ways we barely notice. Whether it's from a demanding job, past injuries, or life's inevitable challenges, your body keeps the score.

At our physiotherapy clinic, we're passionate about offering solutions that go beyond symptom management—helping you find lasting balance and wellness. This is where Craniosacral Therapy comes in.

This remarkable treatment is offered at NWL by Dr Hubert van Griensven. Having worked as a physiotherapist for over 35 years, he completed an intensive course of over 700 hours to become a qualified Craniosacral Therapy practitioner. This included not only course attendance, but also many hours of practise and working in the college teaching clinic. He is a full member of the Craniosacral Therapy Association (CSTA).

What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment using extremely light touch. Unlike traditional manual therapies, Craniosacral Therapy doesn't involve forceful manipulation. Instead, you lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table while the therapist uses subtle techniques to assess and work with the subtle rhythms, tension patterns, and vitality within your body's tissues.

Think of Craniosacral Therapy as tuning your body's internal instrument. Just as a musical instrument goes out of tune, our bodies can accumulate imbalances from stress, trauma, injury, or simply the demands of daily life. Craniosacral Therapy helps restore harmony at a deeply level.

What Makes CST Different?

Many patients are surprised by how light the touch feels during a Craniosacral Therapy session. Therapists commonly work with the head, spine, shoulders, chest, and abdomen—key areas where tension tends to accumulate. But here's what truly sets Craniosacral Therapy apart: it addresses not just physical symptoms, but the interconnected nature of your body-mind system.

The state of your body reflects more than just current wellbeing—it can also hold echoes of past stress, emotions, and even trauma. This holistic approach means Craniosacral Therapy can help with issues that seem unrelated at first glance.

Who Benefits From Craniosacral Therapy?

People seek Craniosacral Therapy for many reasons. Common indications include:

  • Stress and stress-related issues: Poor sleep, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating

  • Trauma recovery: Past accidents, surgeries, dental procedures, and childbirth experiences

  • Headaches and facial pain

  • Pregnancy wellness: Support during and after pregnancy

  • General wellbeing: A sense of not feeling quite right or optimal

If you've tried other treatments without lasting results, Craniosacral Therapy may offer a different path forward.

What to Expect During Treatment

Most people experience deep relaxation both mentally and physically during sessions. You might feel warmth or coolness in different places, gentle pressure, or a sense of movement. These sensations reflect your body's natural process of fine-tuning, aligning, and revitalising itself.

While meaningful changes occur during each session, a typical course involves 4–6 treatments to achieve lasting effects. Our goal is helping you reach a state where your body and mind feel balanced, at ease, and restored.

Your Comfort Comes First

CST is designed to be pleasant and relaxing for most people. If you ever feel uncomfortable during treatment, speak up immediately—we'll adjust accordingly. Your comfort and safety are paramount.

Dr Hubert van Griensven

I have been a physiotherapist for over 35 years. My special interest has been persistent pain, a topic that I have also taught at universities. A few years ago, I developed a pain problem that did not respond to any treatment until I had Craniosacral Therapy. This remarkable result made me sign up for an intensive course of over 700 hours to become a qualified practitioner, which included course attendance, many hours of practise and working in a teaching clinic. I am now a full member of the Craniosacral Therapy Association (CSTA) and happy to offer this remarkable treatment to our patients.
