Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) experience widespread pain and sensitivity in their body. FMS can start after an operation, injury, illness or stressful period, but it may also start without a clear trigger. It may just involve pain, but can go together with fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression.

Research suggests that the pain is the result of changes in the way the brain and spinal cord process signals from the body. This amplifies and distorts those signals. Normal activities such as movement can cause pain. This makes FMS confusing and difficult to manage.

Although there is no cure for FMS, it is possible to reduce the symptoms. You can also learn to deal with the symptoms more effectively and improve your quality of life. Dr Hubert van Griensven understands FMS and how it may affect you. Following a detailed assessment, he agrees a programme of rehabilitation and pain management with you. This can help bring your symptoms under control, improve how you feel and give you back activities that you value in your life.
